The Modern World

The typical family home in villages is a house with a garden. Modern agriculture requires very few people
to work on the fields, so most people commute to their workplace in larger towns. Public services
in most villages include health care, school, and post office, but wider choice (hospitals, theatres, banks)
can be found only in larger towns.

Population

Today many factors influence changes in the population of villages – the trend is for villagers to migrate to the cities in search for jobs, while many city dwellers move into villages, tempted by the promise of a more peaceful lifestyle, closer to Nature.

Farmsteads, scattered randomly on the outskirts of towns and villages, are permanently inhabited groups of buildings, including the family home and its outbuildings such as barns, workshop, stables etc.

Today agricultural communities and villages are going through a transfor­mation, they are becoming tourists destinations, mining or industrial settlements.

Until recently village life
was revolving around the inhabitants’ activities on the fields: growing and harvesting crops, caring
for farm animals. Nowadays the importance of manual work on the farm is diminishing, modern mechanised agriculture is dominating rural life.
